2. Core Features
2.1 Fund Search
Why this search feature: The number of investment choices is overwhelming and investors fear not knowing about funds that are better than the ones they invest in. A complete and comprehensive shortlist of choices is a great starting point, but how do you research your initial list quickly and easily? The search feature nearly instantly finds any ETF listed in Canada and the US by unique search income oriented options not available anywhere else. Search by currency, dividend payment frequency, leverage amount, or combinations such as; “all weekly paying S&P500 index based income funds.”
What is it: The Fund Search tool is designed to help users efficiently locate and evaluate thousands of investment funds (ETFs, closed-end funds, trusts, REITs, and other investment vehicles) across North American markets. You can filter these funds using various criteria such as name, company, category, payment frequency, currency, and leverage.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover”, then select “Search” from the submenu. The search page will load with all available funds and filtering and sorting options.
Search Filters and Inputs
The comprehensive filtering options allow you to refine your search results.
- Fund Name:
- Text input allows searching by the full or partial fund name or ticker symbol to find funds containing that text. For example, searching “NEOS” will find all NEOS ticker symbols.
- Fund Company:
- Dropdown menu lets you select a specific fund manager from an extensive list (e.g., Vanguard, BlackRock, BMO, GraniteShares, Advisors Asset Management, etc.).
- Category:
- Dropdown menu to filter by fund type. Available categories include:
- Alternative Fund
- Bond or Debt Fund
- Closed-End Fund

When certain categories are selected, sub-menus appear for highly granular, targeted searches.
- Index Fund Category:
- Selecting “Index Based Fund” reveals an additional dropdown for type selection.

- Single Stock Fund Category:
- Selecting “Single Stock Fund” reveals an extensive dropdown for stock or asset type.
- Subcategories cover a broad spectrum of equities, tech stocks, and crypto assets, such as: Adobe, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Bitcoin (Crypto), Coinbase, Nvidia, Tesla, and Ethereum. This allows pinpointing yield funds based on a chosen underlying security or asset.
Results Table & Sorting
The database contains over 6,700 funds.
- Standard Details: Each result displays the Fund Ticker and Name, Listing Country and Exchange, Category and Subcategory (where applicable), Currency, Dividend payment frequency (if available), Fund Company, Leverage information (if applicable), and Inception Date (when available). The inception date appears on the same line as the currency field, displayed as “Inception: [date] - Currency: [currency]”. If a fund does not have an inception date, only the currency is displayed.
- Sorting Options: Use the “Sort by” dropdown to organize results by Fund Name, Fund Company, Ticker, Fund Date (ascending), or Fund Date (descending). The Fund Date sorting options allow you to sort funds by their inception date, with ascending showing oldest to newest funds and descending showing newest to oldest. Funds without an inception date will always appear at the end of the list, regardless of the sort direction.
- Pagination Controls: Navigate to the next/previous page of results, or use direct page selection for lists spanning many pages.
- Expandable Descriptions: Some funds include a ”▼ Description” arrow next to the fund name to expand and view the detailed fund description when available. Note: Not all funds have this expander; some provide all necessary information upfront.
Fund Cards: Features and Icons
Fund cards aggregate all critical information, plus direct provider links for robust due diligence.
- Info (‘i’) Icon:
- This icon, visible in the top right corner of fund info boxes or fund cards, indicates that the fund is income oriented and pays monthly or better.

Tips for Effective Use
- Granular Filtering: Start with broad searches and narrow down using multiple filters. Combine multiple filters (category, type, frequency, currency) to pinpoint target funds.
- Niche Searches: For advanced users, combine company, category, and payment frequency to find niche products (e.g., monthly-paying Canadian closed-end bond funds or Monthly-paying Canadian Real Estate funds).
- Partial Matches: Use the fund name search for partial matches when you can’t remember the ticker symbol.
- Quick Performance Checks: Use the graph icons for instant fund performance visualization directly in search results. For full charts and performance, use the ‘Performance’ tab in the navigation.
- Efficient Navigation: Use the sorting and pagination to manage large result sets.
- Extensive Research: Use info icons and provider links for deeper due diligence. You may switch currencies, leverage, or countries to see product variations side-by-side. The search results show key information like exchange, currency, and payment frequency at a glance.
- Remember to Clear Between Searches: Use the grey clear all chip at the top below the page number to reset the search when starting again.
2.2 Fund Picker
Why use the fund picker: Properly evaluating funds is difficult and time-consuming for the average investor. Save time and money by quickly finding funds that meet your goals - avoid costly mistakes. Whereas the search feature is for broad based search, the fund picker focuses on the best income funds available on the market. It’s like having your own personal consultant. All funds have strengths and weaknesses, the fund-picker focuses on finding funds that are strong in the attributes the user most cares about.
What it does: The Fund Picker is an intelligent tool that helps you find the best income funds based on your specific investment priorities. It uses reviews created by an investment analyst to analyze funds and rank them from best to worst according to the criteria you select. This tool eliminates guesswork by providing data-driven recommendations tailored to your investment goals.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover,” then select “Fund Picker” from the submenu. The Fund Picker page will load with filtering options and priority selection tools.
Stock Exchange Selector
Users can filter the displayed funds by selecting the market exchange.

Fund Priorities Selection & Interactive Scoring
This section enables fund ranking based on up to three user-selected priority criteria, which aligns the fund results with specific investment goals.
Priority Selection:
Users can select up to three priorities from dropdown lists. The available options include:

- Expense Ratio
- Fund Assets Under Management (AUM)
- Fund Company Size
- Fund History
- Fund Risk
- Geographic Diversification

Weighting and Controls:
The order matters. Priority 1 must be selected before Priority 2 and Priority 3 become active.
- Priority 1: Select your most important criterion (required to start filtering). It carries the highest weight.
- Priority 2: Choose your second most important factor (becomes available after Priority 1 is set). It carries a moderate weight.
- Priority 3: Select your third priority (becomes available after Priority 2 is set). It has a lesser effect on the ranking.
Utility buttons provided include:
- Help with Priorities: Offers guidance and detailed explanations for each criterion. Users can click this for guidance on selecting the right criteria for their investment goals.
- Reset Priorities: Clears all selections and fund results to allow a fresh start.
Fund Results, Expanded Card View, & Star Ratings
Once priorities are set, the funds matching these criteria are returned and ranked using an internal scoring system. The tool displays funds in order from best to worst based on your selected priorities. A fund must be rated 3 out of 5 or better in all priority categories to be displayed.
Basic Results Display:
Results are initially displayed in a list format showing the Ticker, full fund name, and Fund type (e.g., Diversified, Sector-Based, Index-Based).
Expanded Viewing:
- Star Indicator: Funds may display a ★ Star indicator (Gold stars). This marker instantly highlights “better funds” that score 4/5 or higher across all three chosen priorities, identifying them as “top-rated” picks.
- Detailed Ratings (Hover/View): Hovering over any fund box reveals detailed ratings for each of your priority criteria and the Dependability Score.
- Expanded Details: Clicking on a fund card expands the view to reveal detailed fund information directly beneath, without requiring the user to leave the page. After all three priorities are selected, more information will be revealed about a fund below.
- Detailed Metrics: Expanded fund details include 1–5 star ratings for every scoring factor, often accompanied by “Strength” or “Weakness” side-notes explaining the rating rationale. These categories include: Capital History, Yield Stability, Diversification (Sector/Geographic), Expense Ratio, Fund Company Size/Assets, Fund History/Risk, Volatility, Underlying Assets & Yield, and Distribution Frequency.
- Quick Summary: The expanded view also provides a quick summary of essential data points such as About, Exchange, Fund Category, Payment Frequency, Leverage, Company, and Website.
Controls and Utility Buttons
Controls help users navigate and perform deeper research.
- Pagination: Allows users to browse through multiple pages of funds if the results list exceeds one page.
- “Visit Website”: A link available within the expanded details to go to the provider’s homepage for comprehensive data.

- Performance Data Button: When looking below at the Fund—below the last reviewed date—clicking the Performance Data button will retrieve performance data for the fund selected.
- Add to Portfolio Button: Clicking on the Add to Portfolio button will add the fund to whatever portfolio the user chooses.
Scoring System Explanation & Star Ratings
The scoring system is based on the weight and priority of the user’s selections.
- Weighting: Factors selected as higher priorities (e.g., Priority 1) more strongly influence the fund ranking than lower priorities.
- Common Factors: Common factors used in the scoring include: Dividend yield stability, Absolute yield, Fund volatility, Capital preservation track record, Frequency of payouts, Risk assessment, Fee structure (expense ratios), Diversification (sector/geographic), and Size and history of the fund/fund provider.
Dependability Score Calculation:
The Dependability Score (shown as a percentage out of 100%) is based on a proprietary formula that measures how likely a fund is to be dependable over time. The score is calculated using weighted scoring (in points out of 5) of six key factors in order of priority:
- Yield Stability (96.25%)
- Yield (96.25%)
- Volatility (90%)
- Capital History (82.5%)
- Risk (78.75%)
- Underlying Assets (56.25%)
- Star Rating Interpretation: The ★ Star marker specifically denotes funds that meet high standards (4/5 or higher scores) across all user-selected priorities, making selection easier for both beginners and advanced users. Individual ratings (1–5 stars) are shown for specific factors and are accompanied by analytics such as trailing yield, distribution frequency, and fee levels.
Best Practices & Workflow Tips
To maximize the use of the Fund Picker:
- Select your most critical priority first as Priority 1, as this sets the tone for the ranking.
- Start with “Yield” as Priority 1 if you’re focused on maximizing income generation.
- Use “Yield Stability” as a priority if you prefer consistent, reliable dividend payments.
- Consider “Distribution Frequency” if you need regular weekly or monthly income.
- Look for funds with the ★ indicator (gold stars) because they meet very high standards across all your priorities.
- Expand fund cards (by clicking) to see rich, detailed analytics and quick verdicts before making decisions. Click on individual fund names to view more detailed information about each recommendation.
- Use the Dependability Score to assess long-term reliability—higher scores can indicate more dependable funds over time.
- Combine “Geographic Diversification” and “Sector Diversification” to build a well-balanced portfolio.
- Use “Fund Risk” as a priority if capital preservation is important to you.
- The algorithm considers multiple factors simultaneously, so your priorities work together to find the optimal funds. Results are automatically updated as you change priorities, allowing you to experiment with different combinations.
- For additional fund details, users should use the “Visit Website” link or switch to the “Fund Search” page.
- Use pagination and navigation to explore multiple options.
- Filters can be reset or Help accessed at any time to clarify or change your selections.
- Create a research portfolio: Create a portfolio under the Manage section of the app called: “funds to research” or something similar. Ensure it is NOT included in the combined view. This allows you to save funds for future reference without affecting your actual account portfolios.
- Important Note: Funds must be older than one year in order to be reviewed so that there is enough data to properly review its performance over time.
2.3 Review Funds
Why use the review funds feature: Most people are not fund anylysts and every fund has an overwhelming amount of information on its website to review and compare. With so much info and so many fund choices it is hard to narrow down the perfect one, particularly for funds that seem almost exactly the same (e.g. index based). The Review Funds Feature is great for quickly narrowing down your investment choices, picking the best fund, or validating your current holdings against alternatives in a simple to understand color coded format. Think of it like consumer reports reviews for income funds.
What it does: The Review Funds feature provides a side-by-side comparison tool that displays detailed analyst ratings for up to three funds simultaneously, allowing you to make informed investment decisions by comparing funds using comprehensive analyst reviews. Each fund is evaluated across multiple categories including Fund Attributes, Risk factors, Return metrics, and overall scores. This tool allows you to see detailed ratings across 13 key criteria, helping you understand each fund’s strengths and weaknesses at a glance. The tool uses color-coded ratings (1-5 scale) and provides detailed explanations for each rating, making it easy to compare funds and understand why certain funds may be better suited for your investment goals.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover,” then select “Review Funds” from the submenu. The Review Funds page will load with fund selection dropdowns and the comparison grid ready for use.
Stock Exchange Selector
Users can filter the reviews available by the market exchange where funds are listed.

The exchange selector appears at the top of the page and immediately filters the fund selection dropdowns to show only funds from the selected region.

- Located at the top of the comparison grid
- Clicking “Reset” clears all selected funds and returns the grid to its initial state

- Clicking “Calculate” retrieves and displays the total return percentage for that specific fund
- The calculation includes both price appreciation and dividend returns over the past 52 weeks
- Once calculated, the button is replaced with the return percentage
Total Return Breakdown (Hover Feature):
- After clicking “Calculate” and the total return is displayed, hovering your mouse over the return percentage reveals a detailed breakdown showing:

Suggest a Fund for Review:
- A link at the bottom of the page labeled “Suggest a Fund for Review” allows you to recommend funds for analyst review
- Clicking this link opens your email client with a pre-formatted message to the support team
- Note: Funds must be at least one year old to be eligible for review, as sufficient historical data is required for proper analysis
Best Practices & Tips
To maximize the effectiveness of the Review Funds comparison tool:
- Compare Similar Funds: Select funds that are similar in type or strategy (e.g., compare sector based funds to sector based funds) for the most meaningful comparisons
- Use All Three Slots: When possible, compare three funds at once to get a broader perspective on available options
- Hover for Details: Always hover over rating numbers to read the detailed explanations - these provide crucial context about why a fund received a particular rating
- Check Fund Information: Use the question mark icons next to fund selections to verify you’re comparing the correct funds and check review dates
- Calculate Total Returns: Use the “Calculate” button to see actual performance data, then hover to understand the breakdown between price and dividend returns
- Focus on Your Priorities: Pay special attention to the categories that matter most to your investment goals (e.g., if you need stable income, focus on Yield Stability and Distribution Frequency)
- Review the Dependability Score: The Dependability Score is particularly valuable for income investors as it focuses on factors that predict long-term reliability
- Compare Across Exchanges: Use the Stock Exchange filter “all” to compare funds from Canada and the US, but be aware of currency and fund structure differences
- Understand the Overall Score: The Overall Score provides a balanced view across all attributes, while individual ratings show specific strengths and weaknesses
- Use in Conjunction with Fund Picker: Start with the Fund Picker to identify top candidates, then use Review Funds to do detailed side-by-side comparisons of your shortlist
- Check Review Dates: Older reviews may not reflect recent changes in fund management or strategy - look for the most recent review dates when available
- Verify Independently: Remember that ratings are based on data available at the review date - always verify current information independently before making investment decisions
2.4 Performance
Why use the performance feature: Investors are rightly concerned with accurately calculating the total return of investments over time and not falling for the trap of thinking high yields equals high total return. It is also critical to understand the cost of purchasing shares, how often and how much a fund pays in dividends, and the historical perfomance of funds over specific time periods. Informed investment decisions come with accurate and easy to understand data.
What it does: The Performance feature provides in-depth analysis and visualization of fund performance data. It displays a detailed price chart, dividend payment history, yield calculations, and total return metrics over customizable time periods. The tool calculates returns both with and without dividend reinvestment, shows dividend yield trends over time, and provides a complete picture of how a fund has performed historically. This is perfect for researching funds before investing or tracking the performance of your current holdings. All data is automatically adjusted for stock splits to ensure accurate historical comparisons.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover,” then select “Performance” from the submenu. The Performance page will load with search controls and a help banner ready for you to enter a fund ticker symbol.
Search & Fund Selection
The Performance tool allows you to search for and analyze any income fund or stock by entering its ticker symbol.
Ticker Symbol Input:
- Enter the ticker symbol in the search box (e.g., SPYI, JEPI, QYLD for US funds)
- Canadian funds require the
.TOextension after the ticker symbol (e.g.,USCL.TO,HYLD.TO) - The search box includes autocomplete functionality that suggests matching funds as you type - click on the dropdown item to autofill the field
- For new funds or stocks, autocomplete may not be available, but you can still search by entering the ticker symbol directly
- Note: CBOE-NEO exchange funds (those ending in
.NE) are not supported for performance calculations, but they can be added to your portfolio in the Portfolio Manager
Search Button:
- Click the “Discover” button to retrieve performance data for the entered ticker symbol
- After a successful search, the button text changes to “New Search” to allow you to search for a different fund
- Use the “New Search” option to clear the current search and start fresh
Help Banner:
- A green informational banner appears before you search, providing guidance on:
- How to enter ticker symbols
- Using the autocomplete dropdown
- Canadian fund ticker format (.TO extension)
- Limitations for CBOE-NEO (.NE) funds
Reinvest Dividends Toggle
Control whether dividend payments are reinvested in performance calculations. Drip means Dividend Reinvestment Plan, it essentially means dividends are being invested back into the find by buying more shares. Use “Yes (DRIP)” setting when you are comparing multiple funds total return against each other so that you have an apples to apples comparision.
Options:
- No: Calculates returns assuming dividends are paid out as cash (not reinvested)
- Yes (DRIP): Calculates returns assuming all dividends are automatically reinvested back into the fund thus showing the compounding effect
Impact:
- The reinvestment setting affects total return calculations and the Investment Growth Chart
- With reinvestment: Shows compound growth as dividends are reinvested and earn additional returns which increases total return
- Without reinvestment: Shows price appreciation plus dividend income as total return
- You can toggle this setting at any time to see how reinvestment affects performance
Date Range Selection
Choose the time period for performance analysis to view historical data over different intervals.
Available Options:
-
Last 52 weeks (Default): Shows performance data for the trailing 52 weeks from the most recent Friday
-
Full History: Displays all available historical data for the fund from its inception or earliest available data point
-
Custom Date Range: Allows you to specify exact start date for analysis. The end date will always be the most recent Friday. Custom Date Range:
-
When “Custom Date Range” is selected, start and end date fields appear
-
Select your desired start date using the date picker
-
The minimum available date is limited by the earliest data point available for the selected fund
-
Dates are automatically adjusted to align with trading days (typically Fridays for weekly data which is what the performance tool uses)
Date Range Impact:
- Changing the date range automatically recalculates all performance metrics, charts, and dividend data
- The selected date range applies to all displayed charts and calculations
- Use different date ranges to analyze short-term vs. long-term performance trends
- If a fund has not been in existence for the date range chosen, the App will automatically adjust the period accordingly
Results Display: Information Panels
After searching for a fund, comprehensive performance data is displayed in organized sections.
Fund Description/Info Panel:
When a fund has detailed information in the database, the panel displays:
- Fund Name: The full name of the fund displayed as a large heading
- Exchange: The stock exchange where the fund is listed
- Type: The fund type or category (e.g., ETF, Closed-End Fund, etc.)
- Category: The fund’s sector category (when available)
- Payment Frequency: How often the fund pays dividends (when available)
- Leverage: The leverage percentage if the fund uses leverage (when available or applicable)
- Fund Company and Website: The fund management company name with a clickable link to the fund’s official website (when available)
For stocks or funds without detailed database descriptions, a simplified information panel is displayed showing:
- Stock/Fund Name: The name of the stock or fund
- Exchange: The stock exchange where it’s listed
- Type: The security type
- Currency: The currency in which the security trades
Returns Information Box:
- Ticker Symbol: The fund’s ticker symbol is displayed as a heading. Hovering over the ticker symbol displays a tooltip showing the full fund name when available.
- Total Return: Shows the overall return percentage for the selected date range
- Dividend Return: Shows the return contribution from dividend payments
- Price Return: Displays the return from price appreciation alone
- Return Breakdown: The breakdown shows “Dividend Return: X% | Price Return: Y%” as annualized percentages. Hovering over the return breakdown displays a tooltip showing the Dividend to Price Ratio (e.g., “60:40”), which indicates what percentage of the total return came from dividends versus price appreciation. This ratio helps you understand whether the fund’s returns are primarily income-driven or growth-driven.
- Annualized Return: When the selected date range is not exactly 52 weeks, returns are annualized to allow for comparison across different time periods. The tool uses two methods depending on the period length:
- For periods less than 52 weeks (< 1 year): Both calculation methods are displayed:
- Simple Annualized Return: A linear extrapolation that multiplies the period return by the ratio of 52 weeks to the actual period. This provides a straightforward estimate of what the return would be if the same performance continued for a full year. This method is useful for short-term periods because it gives a quick, easy-to-understand projection without the compounding effects that can make CAGR calculations appear extreme for very short periods.
- Total Return (CAGR): The Compound Annual Growth Rate, which is the mathematically correct annualized return accounting for compounding effects. CAGR uses the formula (1 + return)^(1/years) - 1 to calculate what the annual return would be if the investment grew at a constant rate. This is the standard method used in financial analysis for periods of any length.
- For periods of 52 weeks or more (≥ 1 year): Only the CAGR method is displayed, as it is the appropriate and standard method for annualizing returns over longer periods. The simple annualized method is not shown because CAGR is the correct approach for periods of a year or longer.
- For periods less than 52 weeks (< 1 year): Both calculation methods are displayed:
- All returns are calculated based on the selected dividend reinvestment setting
- Returns are displayed as percentages and can be positive or negative
- End price/share & Start price/share: The price of the shares at the end (most current) and beginning of the periods is shown along with the number of current shares (if dividends reinvested)
Dividend Information Box:
- Ticker Symbol: The fund’s ticker symbol is displayed as a heading. Hovering over the ticker symbol displays a tooltip showing the full fund name when available.
- Latest Dividend: Shows the most recent dividend payment amount in the currency of the payment
- Forward Estimated Yield: Shows the current dividend yield percentage on an annualized basis based on the last payment amount received
- Payment Frequency: Displays how often the fund pays dividends (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.)
- Total Dividends: The label changes based on the dividend reinvestment setting:
- When reinvestment is “No”: Shows “Total Dividends Received for period”
- When reinvestment is “Yes (DRIP)”: Shows “Total Dividends Reinvested for period”
- Displays how much per share in dividends was received (or reinvested) for the searched period in the currency of the payments. A tooltip clarifies this shows the “Actual amount received per share.”
- Dividend Payment Per $10,000: For every $10,000 invested it estimates how much you would receive per month. A tooltip explains that the assumption is $10,000 in the currency of the investment, and that US and Canadian funds can be compared because growth is relative based on percentage.
- Payment Amount Variability: This is different from “Payment Consistency” shown in the Dividend History Table. Payment Amount Variability analyzes the consistency of dividend payment amounts (not timing). It indicates whether dividend payment amounts are steady, increasing, or inconsistent based on historical data. This metric requires 12 or more payments to evaluate variability and does not track missed payments. Note: This is separate from the “Payment Consistency” metric in the Dividend History Table, which tracks whether payments occurred on schedule.
- Split-Share Fund Warning: For split-share funds, a warning message may appear: “Warning: Split-share funds can miss payments if the Unit NAV falls below a certain threshold.” This alerts you to the unique risk characteristics of split-share fund structures.
- Non-Dividend Payer: If the fund does not pay dividends, the box displays “Non-dividend Payer” instead of dividend information
Search Period Display:
- Shows the exact date range used for calculations at the bottom of the information boxes
- Displays both start and end dates in a readable format
- Insufficient Data Warning: If data is unavailable for part of the requested date range, the search period text appears in red, and a red warning message is displayed below it stating: “Data unavailable for part of the requested date range.” This indicates that the selected date range extends beyond the available historical data for the fund
Corporate Action History:
- When applicable, a Corporate Action History section appears below the search period display
- This section lists all corporate actions that occurred during the selected date range, including:
- Stock Splits: Traditional stock splits (e.g., 2-for-1, 3-for-2) that adjust share prices and quantities
- Share Distributions: Share bonuses or distributions (e.g., 10% extra shares) that provide additional shares to shareholders without proportional price reduction
- Frequency Adjustments: Changes to dividend payment frequency (e.g., switching from monthly to weekly payments)
- Each corporate action is displayed with:
- A description of the action (e.g., “2-for-1 Stock Split”, “10% Share Distribution”)
- The effective date when the action occurred
- All historical prices and dividends are automatically adjusted for these corporate actions to ensure accurate performance calculations
- Corporate actions are also reflected in the Dividend History table, where share distributions appear as special entries alongside regular dividend payments
Charts & Visualizations
Multiple interactive charts provide visual representation of fund performance and dividend data.
Investment Return Chart:
- Shows the growth of an investment over the selected time period
- Displays one line showing the investment value over time:
- Investment Value Line: Shows the value over time of a $10,000 investment at the start of the period. When dividend reinvestment is enabled, this line includes the compounding effect of reinvested dividends. When reinvestment is disabled, it shows the value based on price appreciation plus dividend income (not reinvested).
- The chart clearly illustrates the impact of dividend reinvestment on total returns by showing how the investment value grows over time
- Interactive tooltips show exact values when hovering over data points
- Chart Footer: Below the chart, displays:
- Reinvestment Status: When dividend reinvestment is enabled, shows a ”↻ Dividends Reinvested” indicator
- Ending Investment Breakdown: Shows the ending investment value with a breakdown: “Ending Investment: $X (growth: $Y | dividends: $Z)” where:
- Total: The final value of the $10,000 investment
- Growth: The dollar amount of return from price appreciation
- Dividends: The dollar amount of return from dividend payments
Dividend Yield History Chart:
- Displays the annualized dividend yield percentage over time
- Shows how the yield has changed as both dividend amounts and fund prices fluctuate
- Helps identify trends in yield stability or volatility
- Yield is calculated based on the fund’s dividend payment frequency
- Frequency Change Filtering: If the fund changed its payment frequency during the selected period, the chart automatically filters to only show yield data from the most recent frequency change forward. This ensures yield calculations are based on the current payment schedule and are comparable over time.
- Average Yield Line: A dashed line shows the average dividend yield for the selected period. The average dividend yield is calculated as the arithmetic mean (simple average) of all annualized yield percentages shown in the chart. It is computed by summing all yield values and dividing by the number of data points, providing a single percentage that represents the typical yield level during the period.
- Chart Footer: Below the chart, displays:
- Average Dividend Yield: Shows the calculated average yield percentage for the selected period as an annualized percentage
- Frequency Change Notice: When the chart has been filtered due to a payment frequency change, a message appears: “Shortened yield history due to payment frequency change” to explain why the chart may show less data than expected
Price History Chart:
- Shows the fund’s price movement over the selected time period
- Shows price of the stock for specific time periods
- Shows an average price line for the specific time period
- Displays closing prices adjusted for stock splits
- Useful for analyzing price volatility and trends
- Helps identify periods of growth, decline, or stability
- Footer of chart shows the most recent stock price and date used
- Footer of chart shows price variance: The price variance is calculated as the difference between the highest and lowest prices during the selected period, divided by the average price, expressed as a percentage. This shows how much the price fluctuated relative to the average price - a higher percentage indicates greater price volatility during the period.
Dividend History Table:
- Provides a detailed reverse chronological list (newest first) of all dividend-related events within the selected date range
- Table Structure:
- Week Ending Column: Displays the date when each dividend was paid, formatted as “Month Day, Year” (e.g., “January 15, 2024”)
- Payout Amount Column: Shows different information depending on the type of entry:
- Regular Dividends: Displays the currency symbol (when available), dollar amount to 4 decimal places, and “per share” (e.g., “$0.1234 per share”)
- Special Share Distributions: Shows a description of the share distribution (e.g., “10% Extra Stock as Dividend”) instead of a cash amount
- Frequency Adjustments: Displays a note about payment frequency changes (e.g., “Note: Payment frequency changed from monthly to weekly”)
- Change Indicators: When a regular dividend payment amount changes by 0.1% or more compared to the previous regular dividend, a percentage change indicator appears next to the date showing:
- Green text with ”- increase: X.XX%” for dividend increases
- Red text with ”- decrease: X.XX%” for dividend decreases
- Summary Information: Below the table, displays:
- Total Dividends: The sum of all cash dividend payments per share for the selected period
- Payment Consistency: When applicable, shows payment consistency analysis that compares actual dividend payments received versus expected payments based on the fund’s payment frequency. This metric:
- Only displays when there is sufficient data (12 weeks minimum for high-frequency payments like weekly/monthly, 52 weeks minimum for low-frequency payments like quarterly/yearly)
- Filters to only include payments after the most recent frequency adjustment (if the fund changed its payment frequency during the period)
- Displays as: “Paid X of Y [time units], paid Z% of the time” (e.g., “Paid 11 of 12 months, paid 92% of the time”)
- The label shows the payment frequency being analyzed (e.g., “Monthly Payment Consistency:”, “Weekly Payment Consistency:”)
- Helps identify whether the fund is making payments on schedule according to its stated frequency
- All dividend amounts are automatically adjusted for stock splits to ensure accurate historical representation
- Helps verify dividend payment consistency, identify missed or irregular payments, and track dividend changes over time
Data Accuracy & Adjustments
The Performance tool automatically adjusts data to ensure accurate historical comparisons.
Stock Split Adjustments:
- All historical prices and dividends are automatically adjusted for stock splits
- This ensures that performance calculations reflect true returns, not artificial changes from split events
- Split-adjusted data allows for accurate comparisons across different time periods
Data Sources:
- Performance data is sourced from reliable financial data providers
- Data is updated regularly to reflect the most current information
- Historical data availability depends on when the fund was established and data provider coverage
Limitations:
- CBOE-NEO Exchange: Funds listed on the Canadian CBOE-NEO exchange (tickers ending in
.NE) are not supported for performance calculations due to data limitations - Data Availability: Some newer funds may have limited or no data
- Calculation Accuracy: All calculations are based on available data and may not account for all corporate actions or special distributions
Report Wonky Data:
- A “Report Wonky Data” link appears at the bottom of the results page
- Click this link to report suspected data problems or inaccuracies
- The link opens your email client with a pre-formatted message including the fund ticker and date range
- Your reports help improve data quality for all users
Best Practices & Tips
To maximize the effectiveness of the Performance tool:
- Use Autocomplete: Take advantage of the autocomplete dropdown to ensure you’re searching for the correct ticker symbol
- Hover for Details: Hover over ticker symbols to see full fund names, hover over return breakdowns to see dividend-to-price ratios
- Compare Reinvestment Scenarios: Toggle between “No” and “Yes (DRIP)” to see how dividend reinvestment affects long-term returns
- Analyze Different Time Periods: Use different date ranges to understand both short-term volatility and long-term trends
- Review Dividend History: Check the dividend history table to verify payment consistency and identify any irregularities
- Compare Multiple Funds: Search different funds in separate browser tabs to compare performance side-by-side
- Check Yield Trends: Use the Dividend Yield History chart to assess yield stability over time
- Understand Total Return: Focus on total return (including dividends) rather than just price appreciation for income funds
- Use Custom Date Ranges: Select specific time periods to analyze performance during particular market conditions
- Verify Canadian Tickers: Remember to add
.TOextension for Canadian funds (e.g.,HYLD.TOnot justHYLD) - Review All Charts: Each chart provides different insights - review all of them for a complete picture
- Check for Splits: The tool automatically adjusts for splits, but be aware that very old data may have limitations
- Understand Beta Calculation: To see volatility (beta) information, you need sufficient historical data and must compare the fund to the S&P 500 index (SPY) as a second ticker symbol. Beta helps you understand how volatile a fund is compared to the market.
- Heed Split-Share Warnings: If you see a warning about split-share funds, understand that these funds have unique risk characteristics and can miss payments if the Unit NAV falls below certain thresholds
- Distinguish Payment Metrics: Remember that “Payment Amount Variability” (in the Dividend Information Box) analyzes dividend amount consistency, while “Payment Consistency” (in the Dividend History Table) analyzes whether payments occurred on schedule
- Check Chart Footers: Review the footer information below charts for additional insights, including ending investment breakdowns, average yields, and frequency change notices
- Report Issues: If you notice data that seems incorrect, use the “Report Wonky Data” link to help improve the tool
2.5 Plan
Why use the Plan feature: Investing new cash is tedious when you are buying multiple investments and have to calculate projected income and number of sharess to purchase manually. The plan page streamlines and makes easy the process of creating a balanced portfolio plan and can save your allocations directly to your portfolio tracker for easy execution. New investors will benefit from pre-defined portfolio templates they can select and use as a basis for their own customized plan.
What it does: Planning a diversified income portfolio requires careful allocation across multiple funds, calculating exact share quantities, and understanding projected income. The Plan tool is a comprehensive portfolio planning calculator that helps you design and allocate investments across multiple funds, automatically calculating shares, total invested amounts, and projected monthly income based on your allocation percentages. It converts between USD and CAD currencies and provides an estimated annual yield for your entire plan. Once your plan is complete, you can optionally save it directly to a portfolio in the Portfolio Manager, making it easy to track and execute your investment strategy.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover,” then select “Plan” from the submenu. The Plan page will load with the investment amount field ready for you to begin planning your portfolio allocation.
Investment Amount & Currency Selection
Set the total amount you plan to invest and choose your preferred currency for the plan.
Amount to Invest:
- Enter the total dollar amount you want to allocate across all funds in your plan
- The amount can be entered as a number (e.g., 10000, 50000, 100000)
- This amount will be distributed across funds based on the allocation percentages you set
- The amount is used to calculate the number of shares to purchase for each fund based on current market prices as of the previous end of day
Currency Selection:
- Choose between USD (US Dollars) or CAD (Canadian Dollars) using the dropdown menu
- The selected currency determines how total amounts are displayed throughout the plan
- The tool automatically converts between currencies when you include funds that trade in different currencies (e.g., mixing US and Canadian funds)
- Currency conversion uses current exchange rates to ensure accurate calculations
Impact:
- Changing the investment amount automatically recalculates all share quantities and total invested amounts
- Changing the currency updates all displayed values while maintaining accurate conversions for funds in different currencies
- The currency you select should match the currency you’ll be using to make the actual investments
Portfolio Templates
Quickly start your plan by selecting a pre-configured portfolio template that automatically populates your plan table with ticker symbols and allocation percentages.
Country Filter:
- Radio buttons for US and Canada are located next to the “Portfolio Templates” label
- Default selection is US
- Select either US or Canada to filter templates by country
- The template dropdown automatically updates to show only templates for the selected country
- When you change the country selection, any currently selected template is cleared and templates reload for the new country
- This allows you to easily find templates specific to US or Canadian markets
Template Dropdown:
- Located below the country filter radio buttons
- Default option: “No Template Selected - Create Your Own Plan” - allows you to manually create your plan from scratch
- Select from available portfolio templates loaded from the database, filtered by the selected country
- Templates are organized by portfolio name and represent sample portfolio allocations
Selecting a Template:
- Choose a template from the dropdown menu to automatically populate your plan

Switching Templates:
- You can change templates at any time - selecting a new template will replace existing rows with the new template’s holdings
- Selecting “No Template Selected - Create Your Own Plan” clears the template selection but does not clear your rows
- Changing the country filter (US/Canada) will clear the currently selected template and reload templates for the new country
- Use the Reset button to clear everything and start fresh
Best Practices:
- Use templates as a starting point for your plan - they provide a quick way to begin planning
- Customize template-populated plans to match your specific investment goals and risk tolerance
- Templates are especially useful for beginners who want guidance on portfolio structure
- You can still manually add or remove funds after selecting a template
Portfolio Selection
Choose an existing portfolio to save your plan to, or create a new portfolio directly from the Plan tool.
Reset Button:
- Once an amount to invest is added, a “Reset” button appears
- Clicking “Reset” clears all plan data including investment amount, currency, portfolio selection, and all fund rows
- Use this to start over with a fresh plan
Fund Allocation Table
The allocation table is where you build your investment plan by adding funds, setting allocation percentages, and viewing calculated results.
Table Columns:
-
Ticker:
- Enter or select fund ticker symbols using the autocomplete input field - make sure you click on the dropdown or the other fields wont complete automatically
- The autocomplete suggests matching funds as you type - click on a suggestion to select it
- Important: You can enter ANY valid ticker symbol, not just funds from the autocomplete list but you may have to enter the price and dividend frequency manually in this case
- Tooltip Information: Hover over the “Ticker” column header to see important information: “If the ticker symbol does appear on the fund picklist then the price/number of shares will update only when you have allocated 100% to your plan, and after you click the finish button. YOU CAN ENTER ANY VALID TICKER SYMBOL”
- Fund Name Tooltip: Hover over any ticker symbol in the table to see a tooltip displaying the full fund or stock name when available. This helps you quickly verify you’re working with the correct fund, especially when ticker symbols are similar or when using manually entered tickers.
- For Canadian funds, use the
.TOextension (e.g.,HYLD.TO,HDIV.TO) - US funds don’t require an extension (e.g.,
SPYI,JEPI) - When you select a ticker, the tool automatically fetches the current price and latest dividend information
- A loading indicator appears while price data is being retrieved
-
% to Allocate:
- Enter the percentage of your total investment amount to allocate to each fund
- Percentages can be entered with one decimal place (e.g., 25.5%, 33.3%)
- The total of all allocations must equal 100%
- The tool prevents you from allocating more than 100% total
- If you try to exceed 100%, an error message appears: “Total allocation cannot exceed 100%”
- The remaining allocation percentage is displayed in the summary row below the table
-
# Shares:
- Automatically calculated based on the allocation percentage, investment amount, and current fund price

- The portfolio you select is where your plan will be saved when you click “Add investments to Portfolio” after the plan is complete
- You must select a portfolio before you can add funds to your plan but you don’t have to use it
- If you don’t have any portfolios yet, you’ll see a message directing you to the Manage view to create one first
- You can add a new portfolio name by selecting ”➕ Add Portfolio” from the dropdown if you don’t want to use an existing one
- TIP: Create a new portfolio called My_Plan or something so you can store your plan for review in the Manage (Portfolios) section
Add Portfolio Option:
- Select ”➕ Add Portfolio” from the dropdown to create a new portfolio if applicable
- This opens the Portfolio Modal where you can create a new portfolio without leaving the Plan page
- Pro Tip: Create a separate, empty portfolio specifically for planning purposes to keep your plans organized and separate from your actual holdings
- After creating a new portfolio, it will automatically be selected for your plan
Portfolio Tooltip:
- Hover over the portfolio label to see a helpful tooltip explaining that you can create a new portfolio directly from the dropdown
- This is useful for keeping planning separate from tracking actual investments
Saving to Portfolio:
- After finishing your plan, the “Add investments to Portfolio” button is active

- A success message confirms when the plan has been saved successfully
Purchase Confirmation:
- The confirmation modal shows details of what will be added to your portfolio
- Review the information before confirming
- You can cancel if you need to make changes
Currency Conversion & Multi-Currency Support
The Plan tool automatically handles currency conversion when mixing US and Canadian funds.
Automatic Conversion:
- When you select a currency (USD or CAD) for your plan, all displayed values use that currency except the price per share
- Funds that trade in a different currency are automatically converted (total invested) using current exchange rates
- Share calculations use the converted amounts to ensure accuracy
- Monthly income is converted to your selected currency for consistent display
How It Works:
- If your plan currency is USD and you add a Canadian fund (e.g.,
HYLD.TO):- Monthly income in CAD is converted to USD for display
- Total invested amounts are converted back to USD
- The same process works in reverse when your plan currency is CAD and you add US funds
- A funds share price is always shown in the currency that it trades in - regardless of your selected currency
Exchange Rates:
- Exchange rates are fetched automatically when the page loads
- Rates are updated daily to reflect current market conditions
- All conversions use the same exchange rate for consistency within a single plan
Best Practices & Tips
To maximize the effectiveness of the Plan tool:
- Start with Your Investment Amount: Enter your total investment amount first, then build your allocation plan around it
- Use Separate Planning Portfolios: Create dedicated portfolios for planning purposes to keep plans separate from actual holdings
- Verify Ticker Symbols: Double-check ticker symbols, especially for Canadian funds which require the
.TOextension - Check Dividend Frequencies: Ensure you select the correct dividend frequency for each fund to get accurate income projections
- Review Risk Indicators: After finishing, check the risk indicators (R) to understand the risk profile of your planned portfolio
- Allocate to 100%: Make sure your allocations total exactly 100% to see accurate share calculations and income projections
- Compare Scenarios: Create multiple plans with different allocations to compare projected income and yields
- Use for Planning Only: Remember that this tool is for planning - actual share prices may differ when you execute the purchases
- Check Currency Consistency: Be aware of currency conversions when mixing US and Canadian funds - the tool handles this automatically, but understand the impact on your actual investments
- Save Before Making Changes: If you want to preserve a plan, save it to a portfolio before making edits
- Review Estimated Yield: Use the estimated annual yield to compare different allocation strategies
- Consider Diversification: Use the tool to plan allocations that balance income, risk, and diversification across different fund types
- Validate Before Finishing: Ensure all ticker symbols are valid and have price data before clicking “Finish” to avoid errors
- Use Autocomplete When Possible: Take advantage of the autocomplete feature to ensure you’re using correct ticker symbols
- Plan for Whole Shares: Remember that share calculations use whole numbers (rounded down), so your actual investment may be slightly less than your planned amount
2.6 Reinvest
Why use the Reinvest feature: Rebalancing a portfolio with multiple holdings and target allocations requires complex calculations to determine exactly how much to buy or sell of each holding. Manually calculating share quantities, buy amounts, and ensuring allocations match your goals is time-consuming and error-prone. The Reinvest tool automates this process by calculating optimal buy and sell orders to align your portfolio with your target allocations, using intelligent algorithms that can prioritize holdings trading below your cost basis or with higher yields.
What it does: The Reinvest tool is a comprehensive portfolio rebalancing calculator that helps you efficiently reinvest cash or rebalance your existing portfolio holdings. It calculates the exact number of shares to buy or sell for each holding to reach your target allocation percentages, automatically distributing available cash based on your preferences. The tool supports multiple calculation strategies including standard rebalancing (with sales), proportional buy-only distribution, and weighted strategies that prioritize holdings trading below cost basis or with higher yields. It displays real-time calculations showing shares to trade, buy/sell amounts, projected income changes, and remaining cash after transactions.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Discover,” then select “Reinvest” from the submenu. The Reinvest page will load with portfolio selection, amount to invest, and calculation controls ready for you to begin rebalancing your portfolio.
Portfolio Selection
Choose which portfolio to rebalance from your existing portfolios.
Portfolio Dropdown:
- Select a portfolio from the dropdown menu to load its holdings and cash position
- The portfolio you select determines which holdings are displayed in the rebalancing table
- You must select a portfolio before you can perform rebalancing calculations
- If you don’t have any portfolios yet, you’ll see a message directing you to the Manage view to create one first
- The selected portfolio is remembered when you navigate away and return to the page
Portfolio Requirements:
- The portfolio must contain at least one non-cash holding to perform calculations
- Cash holdings (CASH.USD or CASH.CAD) are automatically detected and used to populate the “Amount to Invest” field
- Holdings without price data may cause calculation errors
Amount to Invest & Currency Selection
Set the total amount of cash available for reinvestment and choose your preferred currency.
Amount to Invest:
- The input field automatically populates with the cash amount (CASH.USD or CASH.CAD) from the selected portfolio
- You can adjust this amount to reflect additional cash you plan to add or to reserve some cash for other purposes
- Enter the total dollar amount you want to use for rebalancing (e.g., 10000, 50000, 100000)
- This amount is used in all calculation routines to determine how much to buy of each holding
- When “Allow Sales” is enabled, this amount represents the total cash available, and proceeds from sales are added to it
Currency Selection:
- Choose between USD (US Dollars) or CAD (Canadian Dollars) using the dropdown menu
- The selected currency determines how all values are displayed and calculated
- The tool automatically converts between currencies when you include holdings that trade in different currencies
- Currency conversion uses current exchange rates to ensure accurate calculations
- The currency selection is remembered when you navigate away and return to the page
Impact:
- Changing the investment amount automatically recalculates all buy/sell orders and share quantities
- Changing the currency updates all displayed values while maintaining accurate conversions for holdings in different currencies
- The currency you select should match the currency you’ll be using to make the actual trades
Calculation Strategy Toggles
Control how the rebalancing algorithm calculates buy and sell orders using interactive toggles.
Allow Sales Toggle:
- Default: OFF
- When OFF: The algorithm only suggests buying shares to reach target allocations. It will not suggest selling over-allocated holdings, even if they exceed their target percentages.
- When ON: The algorithm can suggest both buying under-allocated holdings and selling over-allocated holdings to reach exact target allocations. This allows for complete portfolio rebalancing.
- Tooltip: “Will you sell holdings?” - Hover over the toggle to see this explanation
- Impact: When enabled, the calculation uses Routine A (Standard Rebalancing) which calculates exact math to hit target allocations. When disabled, it uses proportional or weighted distribution routines.
Consider Price Toggle (Priority Selection):
- Default: ON (when priority is set to “Consider Price”)
- How to Select: Choose “Consider Price” from the priority radio buttons (No Priority, Consider Price, Consider Yield)
- When Selected: The algorithm prioritizes holdings that are trading below your cost basis (what you paid for them). Holdings that have dropped in price receive a boost in the allocation calculation, meaning more cash is allocated to them.
- Tooltip: “We find holdings furthest from their target goals, boost those trading below what you paid, and allocate your cash so the most behind and most discounted get the largest share. If Allow Sales is ON then the only effect is sorting the discounted holdings to the top.”
- Impact: When “Allow Sales” is OFF, this uses Routine C (Weighted Proportional) which distributes cash based on both allocation gap size AND price drop magnitude. When “Allow Sales” is ON, it uses Routine A but sorts holdings by price decline priority.
Consider Yield Toggle (Priority Selection):
- Default: OFF
- How to Select: Choose “Consider Yield” from the priority radio buttons (No Priority, Consider Price, Consider Yield)
- When Selected: The algorithm prioritizes holdings with higher dividend yields. Holdings with higher yields receive a boost in the allocation calculation, meaning more cash is allocated to them.
- Tooltip: “We find holdings furthest from their target goals, boost those with higher yields, and allocate your cash so the most behind and highest yielding get the largest share. If Allow Sales is ON then the only effect is sorting the highest yielding holdings to the top.”
- Impact: When “Allow Sales” is OFF, this uses Routine D (Weighted Yield) which distributes cash based on both allocation gap size AND yield magnitude. When “Allow Sales” is ON, it uses Routine A but sorts holdings by yield priority.
No Priority Option:
- How to Select: Choose “No Priority” from the priority radio buttons
- When Selected: The algorithm distributes cash based purely on allocation gap size, without any price or yield considerations
- Impact: Uses Routine B (Proportional) when “Allow Sales” is OFF, or Routine A (Standard) when “Allow Sales” is ON, with sorting by buy amount
Priority Level (When Consider Price or Consider Yield is Selected):
- Options: Lower, Medium, Higher
- Default: Medium
- Lower: Subtle influence - price/yield has a 4x multiplier effect on allocation priority
- Medium: Moderate influence - price/yield has a 6x multiplier effect on allocation priority
- Higher: Strongest influence - price/yield has an 8x multiplier effect on allocation priority
- Tooltip: “Goal allocation is always the primary factor. Priority level only affects how much price/yield boosts holdings below their target. Low = subtle influence, High = strongest influence.”
- Impact: Higher priority levels give more weight to price declines or yields when distributing cash, meaning holdings with better prices or yields get proportionally more cash allocation
Match Currency Toggle:
- Default: OFF
- When OFF: All holdings are included in calculations regardless of their currency
- When ON: Holdings that don’t match the selected currency are automatically excluded from calculations
- Tooltip: “Exclude holdings that do not match the selected currency” (or “This option only appears when your portfolio has holdings in multiple currencies” if disabled)
- Availability: This toggle only appears when your portfolio contains holdings in multiple currencies (both USD and CAD)
- Impact: When enabled, only holdings matching your selected currency are included in rebalancing calculations, simplifying multi-currency portfolio management
Reset Button:
- Located at the top right of the page
- Clicking “Reset” clears all selections including portfolio, amount to invest, currency, toggle states, and all holdings data
- Use this to start over with a fresh rebalancing session

Goal Management & Normalization
The tool automatically manages goal percentages to ensure they sum to 100% when exclusions are used.
Goal Editing:
- Click in any “Goal” field to edit the target allocation percentage
- Goals can be entered with one decimal place (e.g., 25.5%, 33.3%)
- Changes are automatically saved to the database when you click out of the field
- If you try to exceed 100% total (when no exclusions exist), the goal is automatically clamped at the limit
Automatic Normalization:
- When holdings are excluded, the remaining goals are automatically normalized to sum to 100%
- This ensures that excluded holdings don’t affect the allocation percentages of included holdings
- Normalization happens automatically when you exclude or un-exclude holdings
- If you manually adjust goals after exclusions, your manual adjustments are preserved
Goal Warning Dialog:
- If you exclude a holding when goals don’t currently sum to 100%, a warning dialog appears
- The warning explains that goals will be normalized to sum to 100% of included holdings
- You can proceed (normalize goals) or cancel (keep current goals and don’t exclude)
Weighted Overall Goals:
- When viewing a portfolio that’s included in the combined view, you may see a “weighted overall goal” below individual goals
- This shows your total target allocation for a holding across all portfolios in the combined view
- Each portfolio’s goal is weighted by its market value to calculate the overall goal
- This helps you see how individual portfolio goals contribute to your total allocation strategy
Calculation Routines
The tool uses different calculation algorithms based on your toggle settings.
Routine A: Standard Rebalancing (Allow Sales ON):
- Used when “Allow Sales” toggle is ON
- Calculates exact math to hit target allocations
- Can suggest both buying under-allocated holdings and selling over-allocated holdings
- Assumes proceeds from sales fund purchases
- Provides precise rebalancing to exact target percentages
Routine B: Proportional Buy-Only (Allow Sales OFF, No Priority):
- Used when “Allow Sales” is OFF and no priority (price/yield) is selected
- Distributes available cash based purely on allocation gap size
- Only suggests buying shares, never selling
- Holdings furthest below their target get proportionally more cash
- Simple and straightforward distribution method
Routine C: Weighted Price Buy-Only (Allow Sales OFF, Consider Price ON):
- Used when “Allow Sales” is OFF and “Consider Price” is selected
- Distributes cash based on both allocation gap size AND price drop magnitude
- Holdings trading below cost basis receive a boost in allocation priority
- Priority level (Lower/Medium/Higher) controls how much weight price decline has
- Caps purchases at target values to prevent overallocation
- Implements a “buy low” strategy by prioritizing discounted holdings
Routine D: Weighted Yield Buy-Only (Allow Sales OFF, Consider Yield ON):
- Used when “Allow Sales” is OFF and “Consider Yield” is selected
- Distributes cash based on both allocation gap size AND yield magnitude
- Holdings with higher yields receive a boost in allocation priority
- Priority level (Lower/Medium/Higher) controls how much weight yield has
- Caps purchases at target values to prevent overallocation
- Prioritizes income generation by favoring higher-yielding holdings
Sorting by Priority:
- When “Allow Sales” is ON, priority settings (Consider Price/Yield) only affect sorting, not allocation
- Holdings are sorted to show the most relevant opportunities first (discounted or high-yield)
- When “Allow Sales” is OFF, priority settings affect both allocation and sorting
Currency Conversion & Multi-Currency Support
The Reinvest tool automatically handles currency conversion when mixing US and Canadian holdings.
Automatic Conversion:
- When you select a currency (USD or CAD), all displayed values use that currency
- Holdings that trade in a different currency are automatically converted using current exchange rates
- Share calculations use converted amounts to ensure accuracy
- Buy/sell amounts are converted to your selected currency for consistent display
Exchange Rates:
- Exchange rates are fetched automatically when the page loads
- Rates are updated daily to reflect current market conditions
- All conversions use the same exchange rate for consistency within a single calculation
- The exchange rate is displayed in the Portfolio Manager but not shown on the Reinvest page
Match Currency Feature:
- When “Match Currency” is enabled, only holdings matching your selected currency are included
- This simplifies rebalancing by focusing on a single currency
- Useful when you want to rebalance USD holdings separately from CAD holdings
- Excluded holdings (due to currency mismatch) appear grayed out in the table
Native Currency Display:
- Share prices are always shown in the holding’s native currency (USD or CAD symbol)
- Buy/sell amounts show in your selected currency, with tooltips showing native currency amounts
- This helps you understand the actual trade amounts in the currency you’ll be using
State Persistence
The Reinvest tool remembers your settings and selections when you navigate away and return.
Persisted Settings:
- Portfolio selection
- Amount to invest
- Currency selection
- Toggle states (Allow Sales, Match Currency, Priority selection, Priority Level)
- Sort preference (whether table is sorted by priority)
- Manually excluded holdings
Automatic Restoration:
- When you return to the Reinvest page, your previous settings are automatically restored
- Holdings are recalculated using your saved settings
- If market data has changed, calculations reflect current prices
- If portfolio holdings have changed, the table updates accordingly
Cache Management:
- Calculation results are cached to improve performance
- Cache is automatically invalidated when portfolio holdings change
- Cache is cleared when you change portfolios or reset the page
Best Practices & Tips
To maximize the effectiveness of the Reinvest tool:
- Set Target Goals First: Before rebalancing, ensure all holdings have appropriate goal percentages set. Goals should sum to 100% for best results.
- Use Allow Sales for Complete Rebalancing: Enable “Allow Sales” when you want to achieve exact target allocations, even if it means selling over-allocated holdings.
- Use Consider Price for Buy-Low Strategies: Enable “Consider Price” to prioritize holdings trading below your cost basis, implementing a dollar-cost averaging or buy-low strategy.
- Use Consider Yield for Income Focus: Enable “Consider Yield” to prioritize higher-yielding holdings when you want to maximize income generation.
- Adjust Priority Levels: Experiment with different priority levels (Lower/Medium/Higher) to find the right balance between goal allocation and price/yield considerations.
- Exclude Holdings Strategically: Use the exclude checkbox to temporarily remove holdings from rebalancing without deleting them from your portfolio.
- Use Match Currency for Simplicity: Enable “Match Currency” when rebalancing holdings in a single currency to simplify calculations and avoid currency conversion complexity.
- Review Before Executing: Always review the calculated buy/sell amounts before executing trades. Actual market prices may differ from calculated values.
- Check Remaining Cash: Monitor the “Rem. Cash” value to ensure efficient cash utilization. A value close to $0.00 indicates all cash is being used.
- Use the Sort Button: The sort button label changes based on your strategy (Buy Amount, Price Decline, or Yield). Click it after making changes to see holdings organized by your current strategy.
- Understand Goal Normalization: When exclusions exist, goals are automatically normalized. Be aware that excluding holdings will redistribute goal percentages among remaining holdings.
- Use for Regular Rebalancing: Use this tool regularly (monthly or quarterly) to maintain your target allocations as market prices change.
- Consider Tax Implications: Be aware that selling holdings may have tax consequences. Review sell suggestions carefully before executing.
- Verify Price Data: If a holding shows $0.00 or unusual values, check that price data is available. Some newer or less common holdings may have limited data.
- Save Goals for Future Use: Goal percentages are saved to your portfolio, so they persist for future rebalancing sessions.
- Use Add New for Missing Holdings: If a holding is missing from your portfolio, use the “Add New” button to add it before rebalancing.

- Changing the date range automatically recalculates all performance metrics, charts, and dividend data when one fund has been searched - not possible after two funds have been compared.
- The selected date range applies to all displayed charts and calculations
- Use different date ranges to analyze short-term vs. long-term performance trends
- If a fund has not been in existence for the date range chosen, the App will automatically adjust the period accordingly
Results Display: Information Panels
After searching for a fund, comprehensive performance data is displayed in organized sections After comparing two funds, confetti is shown and a star is placed next to the fund that has better performance for that time period
- Beta/Volatility Indicator: When there is sufficient historical data and you compare the fund to the S&P 500 index (SPY) as a second ticker symbol, a β (beta) symbol appears next to the “End price/share” value. Hovering over the beta symbol displays a tooltip showing the fund’s volatility (Beta) compared to the S&P 500. A beta lower than 1 indicates the fund is less volatile than the S&P 500, while a beta higher than 1 indicates greater volatility. Lower beta values can mean smaller price swings and less risk.
An interactive chart provides a visual representation of fund performance.
To maximize the effectiveness of the Compare tool:
- Use Autocomplete: Take advantage of the autocomplete dropdown to ensure you’re searching for the correct ticker symbol
- Hover for Details: Hover over ticker symbols to see full fund names, hover over return breakdowns to see dividend-to-price ratios, and hover over beta symbols to see volatility information
- Compare Reinvestment Scenarios: Toggle between “No” and “Yes (DRIP)” to see how dividend reinvestment affects long-term returns
- Analyze Different Time Periods: Use different date ranges to understand both short-term volatility and long-term trends
- Understand Total Return: Focus on total return (including dividends) rather than just price appreciation for income funds
- Use Custom Date Ranges: Select specific time periods to analyze performance during particular market conditions
- Verify Canadian Tickers: Remember to add
.TOextension for Canadian funds (e.g.,HYLD.TOnot justHYLD) - Check for Splits: The tool automatically adjusts for splits, but be aware that very old data may have limitations
- Distinguish Payment Metrics: Remember that “Payment Amount Variability” (in the Dividend Information Box) analyzes dividend amount consistency
- Check Chart Footers: Review the footer information below a chart for additional insights
- Report Issues: If you notice data that seems incorrect, use the “Report Wonky Data” link to help improve the tool

2.10 Manage
Why use the Manage feature: Managing spreadsheets for multiple portfolios is a pain and they seldom automatically update with the latest ETF or Stock prices. Brokerage accounts usually don’t show current dividend yields and monthly income, nor do they allow you to create test portfolios for planning purposes. Some brokerage accounts don’t even display a combined view of multiple porfolios. Tracking your income portfolio across multiple accounts and currencies requires careful organization and accurate calculations. The Manage feature (Income Portfolio Manager) solves these problems by providing a comprehensive portfolio tracking system that allows you to organize holdings across multiple portfolios (e.g., 401k, TFSA, IRA, taxable accounts), track performance, and calculate monthly/yearly income projections. It automatically fetches current market prices and dividend data, calculates income across different currencies, and provides a unified view of all your income investments.
What it does: The Manage feature is a full-featured portfolio manager that tracks your income investments across multiple portfolios. It displays holdings in a detailed table showing ticker symbols, allocation percentages, share quantities, cost basis, current market values, price growth, dividend information, and projected income. You can create multiple portfolios to organize investments by account type (e.g., retirement accounts, taxable accounts), add holdings manually or from the Plan tool, track cash positions, and view either individual portfolios or a combined view of all portfolios. The tool automatically calculates monthly and annual income projections, portfolio allocation percentages, with automatic currency conversion between USD and CAD.
How to access it: Navigate to the main menu and click “Manage.” The Income Portfolio Manager page will load with your portfolios and holdings displayed in a comprehensive table.

- The toggle affects all displayed values in the table except for the Totals at the bottom which are in your account’s preferred currency.
Exchange Rate Display:
- The current USD to CAD exchange rate is displayed at the top of the page
- Shows the rate as “1 USD = X.XXXX CAD” with the date and time of the last update
- Exchange rates are updated daily to reflect current market conditions
- All currency conversions use this exchange rate for consistency
Currency Conversion:
- Holdings in different currencies are automatically converted when viewing in your account currency
- Cash holdings can be tracked separately for USD (CASH.USD) and CAD (CASH.CAD)

4. Troubleshooting
4.1 Issue: App Appears Frozen or Pages Don’t Refresh Properly
Symptoms:
- The app appears frozen or unresponsive
- Pages don’t load or refresh when you click navigation links
- Buttons don’t respond when clicked
- Data doesn’t update when expected
- The page seems stuck or doesn’t change after clicking elements
- This can occur after the app has been logged in for an extended period of time
Solution:
-
Log Out and Log Back In:
- Click on your initials (or profile icon) in the top right corner of the navigation bar
- Select “Sign out” from the dropdown menu
- Wait for the logout to complete and you’re returned to the login page
- Log back in using your usual method (Google Sign-In or email/password)
- This should restore normal app functionality
-
Alternative Approaches:
- Refresh the Page: Try refreshing the browser page (F5 or Ctrl+R / Cmd+R) before logging out
- Clear Browser Cache: If logging out and back in doesn’t work, try clearing your browser cache and cookies, then log back in
- Close and Reopen Browser: Close the browser tab or window completely and open a new one, then navigate back to the app
-
Prevention:
- If you notice the app becoming slow or unresponsive, proactively log out and log back in to refresh your session
- Regular logouts can help prevent this issue from occurring
-
When to Contact Support:
- If logging out and back in doesn’t resolve the issue
- If the problem occurs immediately after logging in
- If you experience persistent freezing or unresponsiveness even after refreshing your session
- Contact support through the “Support / Billing” link in the footer for further assistance
4.2 Issue: After Payment I Don’t Have Premium Access
Symptoms:
- You completed a payment for Premium subscription but still see Free account features
- Premium features (like posting in Discuss, Fund Picker, etc.) are not available
- Your account status still shows as “Free” after making a payment
- This can happen if you made a payment on buymeacoffee.com using a different email address than your app account email
Solution:
-
Check Your Email Addresses:
- Verify the email address you used for payment (check your payment confirmation email)
- Verify the email address associated with your app account (check Account Settings)
- If these email addresses are different, this is likely the cause of the issue
-
Contact Support:
- The backend upgrade process requires the payment email to match your account email
- If you used a different email for payment, contact support immediately
- Support will need to manually upgrade your account to Premium
- Click the “Support / Billing” link in the footer to contact support
-
Provide Information to Support:
- Your app account email address
- The email address you used for payment
- Payment confirmation details (transaction ID, date, amount)
- Screenshot of payment confirmation if available
- This information helps support quickly identify and resolve the issue
-
Prevention:
- Always use the same email address for payment that you use for your app account
- If you need to use a different email, contact support before making the payment to coordinate the upgrade
- Check your account email in Account Settings before making a payment to ensure they match

- On the login page, look for a “Forgot / Reset Password” and click this link
- Enter your email address to receive a password reset link
- Check your email inbox (and spam folder) for the reset link
- Follow the instructions in the email to create a new password
- Try logging in again with your new password
-
For Google Sign-In Accounts:
- Click the “Sign in with Google” button
- Make sure you’re signing in with the same Google account you used when creating your account
- If you have multiple Google accounts, ensure you select the correct one
- Check that you’re not blocking pop-ups or third-party cookies, which may prevent Google Sign-In from working
-
Check Your Email Address:
- Verify you’re using the exact email address associated with your account
- Check for typos in the email address
- Ensure you’re not using a different email address than the one you registered with
-

- Check Internet Connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection
- Try Incognito/Private Mode: Open a new incognito or private browsing window and try logging in
-
Account Status:
- If you’ve been locked out after multiple failed login attempts, wait a few minutes before trying again
- Some accounts may be temporarily locked for security reasons after repeated failed login attempts
-
When to Contact Support:
- If password reset emails are not being received (check spam folder first)
- If you’re certain you’re using the correct login method and credentials but still can’t log in
- If you’re unable to access your account after trying all the above steps
- If you believe your account may have been compromised
- Contact support through the “Support / Billing” link in the footer

- Close all tabs with the app open
- Open a fresh tab and navigate to the app
- You should be logged out
-
Browser Extensions:
- Some browser extensions (password managers, session managers) may interfere with logout
- Try disabling browser extensions temporarily and attempt to log out again
- If logout works with extensions disabled, re-enable them one by one to identify the problematic extension
-
When to Contact Support:
- If none of the above solutions work
- If you’re concerned about account security and need immediate logout
- If you need to log out from a shared or public computer
- Contact support through the “Support / Billing” link in the footer for assistance
-
Security Note:
- If you’re on a shared or public computer and can’t log out, clearing browser data (step 3) will effectively log you out

6. FAQs
Q: Why can’t I log in to my account?
A: The most common reason is using the wrong login method. If you created your account with Google Sign-In, you must use the “Sign in with Google” button - you cannot use email/password. If you created your account with email/password, you must use the email and password fields - you cannot use Google Sign-In. The login method must match how you originally created your account. If you’re still having trouble, try resetting your password or contact support. For more detailed troubleshooting, see section 4.3 “Can’t Login to the App.”
Q: Why do Canadian funds require a .TO extension?
A: Canadian funds listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange require the .TO extension to distinguish them from US-listed funds with the same ticker symbol. For example, HYLD.TO is the Canadian fund, while HYLD would be a US fund. This extension is required in the Performance, Compare, Plan, and Portfolio Manager tools. Funds listed on the CBOE-NEO exchange use a .NE extension, but these funds are not supported for performance calculations (though they can be added to your portfolio). For more information, see sections 2.4 Performance, 2.7 Compare, and 2.5 Plan.
Q: What’s the difference between Free and Premium accounts?
A: Free accounts can compare funds, read community discussions (read-only), and view basic fund data. Premium accounts ($119 USD/year or $59 USD/3 months) get full access to all features including: posting and commenting in the community forum, detailed performance charts with dividend history, the Fund Picker tool with dependability scoring, side-by-side fund comparisons based on comprehensive reviews, Portfolio Manager for tracking multiple portfolios, weekly dividend change notifications, and the advanced search tool with filtering. For a complete comparison, see section 1.4 “First Time Login” or visit the Subscription page in your account settings.
Q: How does currency conversion work in the Portfolio Manager?
A: The Portfolio Manager automatically converts between USD and CAD using current exchange rates. You can toggle between viewing all values in your account’s preferred currency (USD or CAD) or viewing each holding in its native currency. Exchange rates are updated daily and displayed at the top of the Portfolio Manager page. When you add holdings, you specify the currency of purchase, and the tool automatically handles conversions for display and calculations. Cash can be tracked separately as CASH.USD or CASH.CAD. For more details, see section 2.9 Manage.
Q: Can I create multiple portfolios?
A: Yes! You can create up to 20 portfolios to organize your investments by account type (e.g., RRSP, TFSA, IRA, 401K, taxable accounts). Each portfolio can have its own holdings and cash positions. You can view individual portfolios or use the “Combined View” to see all holdings aggregated together. You can also exclude certain portfolios from the combined view (useful for test portfolios or planning portfolios). To create a new portfolio, click “add/edit portfolios” in the Portfolio Manager. For step-by-step instructions, see section 3.1 “Create a Portfolio and Add Your First Holding.”
Q: How do dividend notifications work?
A: Dividend notifications are a Premium feature that sends weekly email alerts about dividend changes for funds in your portfolio. To enable notifications for a specific holding, check the “Notify on Changes (weekly)” checkbox when adding or editing a holding in the Portfolio Manager. Notifications are separate from general email subscriptions and will continue even if you unsubscribe from general emails. You can enable or disable notifications for each holding individually. For more information, see section 5.3 Notifications.
Q: How often is the data updated?
A: Market prices and dividend data are updated daily, typically after market close. Exchange rates are also updated daily. Historical performance data is sourced from reliable financial data providers and is updated regularly. News articles are cached for 5 minutes to improve performance, then fresh data is fetched. Portfolio Manager prices reflect the most recent end-of-day prices. For the most current information, refresh the page.
Q: What happens if I pay for Premium but use a different email address?
A: The backend upgrade process requires the payment email to match your app account email. If you pay using a different email address (e.g., a different email on buymeacoffee.com), your account won’t automatically upgrade to Premium. In this case, you’ll need to contact support with both email addresses and payment confirmation details, and support will manually upgrade your account. To avoid this issue, always use the same email address for payment that you use for your app account. For more information, see section 4.2 “After Payment I Don’t Have Premium Access.”
